Argentina lifts restrictions on beef exports

The government of the Argentine president Javier Milei authorized the export of seven popular cuts of beef, which had been prohibited by his predecessor, Alberto Fernández.

Under the new administration, the National Service of Agrifood Health and Quality (SENASA) authorized the export of all beef cuts from the country, whether fresh, refrigerated, or frozen.

The differentiation for the export of cows of categories D and E and bulls was also suspended. Although not consumed in the domestic market, these products are part of the diet of Asian countries.

Restricting exports has been a tool of Argentine governments to contain the internal rise in prices. The Fernández administration suspended beef exports in May 2021 and then implemented a quota system and a ban on the export of certain cuts.

According to the latest survey by the ABC Consortium, beef exports totaled 920,000 tons of bone-in beef in 2023, a positive number. The volume obtained is 5% above that recorded in 2022.

Mario Ravettino, president of ABC, stated that allowing the export of the seven popular beef cuts in 2024 could mean an additional 80,000 tons. “With an extra advantage: Argentina reinserts itself into the world,” he said.
