South Korea and South Africa reopen borders for UK poultry

UK poultry producers will be able to resume exports to South Korea for the first time since 2020. South Africa has also given the green light for British products after an eight-year ban.

The decisions were made after the UK was declared free from avian flu earlier this year, enabling UK trade negotiators to successfully reopen these high-value markets.

The UK government estimates that the resumption of trade with South Africa will bring up to £ 160 million (USD 209.2 million) to the country’s poultry industry.

In addition to the reopening of South Africa and South Korea, exports to Antigua have also regained active Export Health Certificate (EHC) status after being suspended in 2021 due to a Caribbean ban.

The Association of Independent Meat Suppliers (AIMS) welcomed the return of these markets, noting that others could be reopened in the future.

However, Tony Goodger, a spokesperson for AIMS, emphasized that the key market British traders would like to see reopened is Saudi Arabia.
