Milei promises export tax reductions in 2025

Argentine President Javier Milei said in a speech that he hopes to end 2025 with the so-called “retenciones,” export taxes on agribusiness, significantly reduced.

“I hope to return here next year so that we can all celebrate having a much better economy, with growth, declining inflation, falling poverty, and being able to celebrate that the ‘retenciones’ have decreased,” Milei said at the Argentine Rural Society (SRA).

The elimination or drastic reduction of “retenciones” has been a historic demand of Argentina’s agribusiness sector. In the same week, Milei announced during a TV address that his economic team is finalizing a tax reform proposal that aims to cut 90% of national taxes by 2025.

Meat for Morocco

Argentine and Moroccan national entities announced that Morocco will begin receiving lamb and goat meat from the Latin American country. This development expands Argentina’s export possibilities to North Africa, which have so far been focused primarily on beef.

Morocco’s National Office for Food Safety (ONSSA) has established that all imported meat must have a health certificate issued by competent authorities in the country of origin. Additionally, the meat must have a halal slaughter certificate issued by a nationally authorized Islamic organization.

Argentina’s lamb and goat farming has been growing, driven by increasing domestic and international demand. According to the National Service for Agri-Food Health and Quality (Senasa), exports of lamb and goat meat cuts exceeded 5,000 tons between January and November 2024. Brazil, Qatar, Spain, Israel, Tunisia, and the Netherlands were the main buyers.
