Canada has opened its market to Brazilian beef produced in the states of Rio Grande do Sul, Paraná, Acre, Rondônia, as well as 14 municipalities in Mato Grosso and five in Amazonas, which are recognized as free of foot-and-mouth disease without vaccination by the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH). The news was announced by the country’s Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa).
Eleven establishments in these locations are authorized to export bovine meat products. Previously, only the state of Santa Catarina was allowed to export beef to Canada.
“The reopening of this market was already anticipated by Brazil’s animal protein sector, especially for these states, which, since the opening of the Canadian market in March 2022, were not authorized to export raw beef to Canada due to the non-vaccination of their herds,” said Agriculture and Livestock Minister Carlos Fávaro.
Canada also removed the vaccination requirement for cooked beef, allowing any Brazilian establishment authorized to export, regardless of the state of origin, to send the product to the country.
“In addition to this achievement for the sector, we are working with the Brazilian Embassy in Canada to remove the vaccination requirement for raw beef as well,” said Mapa’s Secretary of Commerce and International Relations, Roberto Perosa. According to Mapa, Canada imported USD 39 million in Brazilian beef in 2023, an 18% increase over 2022.
